Coventry Law Centre highlights Age Positive week

9 May 2006

8th to 12th May is Age Positive week.

Coventry Law Centre wants to encourage employers to review their policies to ensure that they won't discriminate against employees on grounds of age. From 1st October 2006 Regulations will be in force to make discrimination on the grounds of age in the workplace unlawful. The Regulations will apply to discrimination on the grounds of any age, so they do not just apply to older workers or young people.

Fiona Monk, Solicitor in the Employment and Discrimination Team at Coventry Law Centre says "The Age Discrimination Regulations have potentially far-reaching consequences and I would urge employers to start reviewing their policies and procedures now to make sure that they won't be in breach of them. Employers should recognise the benefits that recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce bring, and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity in the workplace. Policies around recruitment, redundancy, retirement and service related benefits are particularly vulnerable to challenge."

From October 1st employees will have the opportunity to take their employer to an Employment Tribunal if they think they have been the victim of discrimination on the grounds of age.

Coventry Law Centre provides free advice and representation to employees on employment and discrimination issues. Their advice line 76 253169 runs on Tuesday & Thursday, 10.00 am to 12.00 noon and Wednesday 4.00pm to 5.30pm. The next drop in employment advice day is on 24th May from 10am to 2pm at Coventry Law Centre, The Bridge, Broadgate. Coventry. CV1 1NG
